ID Epi Seminar Series: Kathleen Neuzil

Bio:
Dr. Neuzil is a Professor of Medicine and Pediatrics, Director of the Center for Vaccine Development and Global Health (CVD), and Director of the Division of Geographic Medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. She received her BS in zoology from the University of Maryland, College Park, her MD from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, and her MPH from Vanderbilt University. She received her training in internal medicine and infectious diseases at Vanderbilt University.
Dr. Neuzil has over two decades of experience in infectious diseases and vaccine science, policy and introduction. At CVD, Dr. Neuzil leads an academic vaccine research and development enterprise that is engaged in the full range of vaccinology- from basic laboratory science research through vaccine development, early clinical evaluation, large-scale pre-licensure field studies and post-licensure assessments. Throughout her career, she has conducted clinical and epidemiologic studies on vaccine-preventable diseases – including influenza, rotavirus, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), Japanese encephalitis virus and typhoid. For ten years at PATH, Dr. Neuzil provided strategic leadership, direction, and technical guidance for vaccine projects that spanned from vaccine development to field implementation, and included work on maternal immunization. Dr. Neuzil has extensive experience in domestic and international policy, including membership on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices and the Pandemic Influenza Task Force for the Infectious Disease Society of America. Dr. Neuzil currently serves as a member of the Strategic Advisory Group of Experts (SAGE), the primary vaccine policy body for the World Health Organization. She has written nearly 200 scientific manuscripts, commentaries and book chapters on vaccines and infectious diseases. She is currently an Associate Editor of the journal Vaccine.
